I sat there sobbing, leaning over with my face in my hands, and hoping the kids wouldn’t hear me from inside the house. “Please Lord, I’m begging for your help, I cannot do this anymore, I am a miserable failure of a parent, and I don’t deserve to be their mom. Maybe I need to find a new home for my adopted kids. This can’t be what you had planned.”
Just then, two scissor tail birds came swooping under the back porch and circled above my head for what felt like minutes. I had never seen them come so close and it was a clear reminder of my two adopted children. I felt God saying to me “I chose you for this, do you remember? I knew ahead of time all the mistakes you would make and still I wanted you for this. You are enough.”
Shame and grace mixed together, and I knew at that moment I could go on, but I needed help. A devout homeschooling mom, I sent all five of my children to public school and left my part-time marketing job. I cut off a toxic relationship and started counseling. Healing from secondary trauma was slow, but it came, and it was miraculous.
5 years later, I have learned to move from complete burnout to thriving motherhood, most days anyhow. God is still showing me my biggest hindrance is a deep belief that I am not enough. From a place of needing this message of being enough, I wrote a 7-minute devotional for my fellow foster and adoptive moms. Each day includes a passage, a short devotional, and three journal prompts. I love you, and I’m praying for you.
